Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing for Estate Agencies

With the recent crackdown by HMRC, it has never been more important for estate agents to ensure that they are complying with their legal obligations regarding anti-money laundering. Estate agents are a crucial line of defence against money laundering and terrorist financing and their controls and procedures must be fit for purpose.

This half-day Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorist Financing for Estate Agencies course provides an essential overview and refresher, including a review of recent changes to laws and regulations, the attitude of the authorities and the key findings of the UK’s National Risk Assessment.  It provides an overview of the UK’s legal and regulatory framework.

The course reviews the position of estate agents, taking a risk-based approach throughout and provides an understanding of the controls and processes needed to manage the threats.  At the end of the course delegates will be aware of the threats and how to take a risk-based approach to manage them.

Applying FRS 101 – The Reduced Framework

This course is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of adopting/applying FRS 101 Reduced Disclosure Framework together with EU-adopted IFRS.

FRS 101 Reduced Disclosure Framework provides disclosure exemptions which are available for certain qualifying entities that apply IFRS in their individual financial statements.  This course provides a detailed look at the differences in the accounting treatment between previous UK GAAP and FRS 101 together with the specific requirements on first time adoption of FRS 101 (and EU-IFRS which it requires).

Illustrative examples and case studies are used throughout.  Additional application guidance and practical resources are also provided. 

Banking and Financial Markets – The Fundamentals

This is a highly participative Banking and Financial Markets – The Fundamentals two-day programme is designed for those who are new to the world of banking and international finance, but who do not necessarily have a financial background.

We will look at market structure, market participants, market mechanics and explore the various financial instruments and discuss their uses and practical applications. All terminology will be fully explained and new financial markets initiatives explored.

No prior knowledge is assumed.

Capital Allowances – The UK Regime and Planning Issues

This Capital Allowances course aims to cover in detail the main features of the current UK tax relief regime for business capital expenditures and identifies specific planning opportunities. It will examine in some detail the rules on “plant and machinery”, property purchases and available allowances for integral features and systemic costs.

Capital Gains and Inheritance Tax

This Capital Gains and Inheritance Tax training course is a practical course reviewing the principles and computational aspects of capital gains and inheritance tax, with a focus on current planning issues and opportunities to minimise the potential tax burden – including the use of trusts in the current climate and key anti-avoidance measures.

At the end of the course participants will benefit from:

  • An understanding of the circumstances when a potential tax charge arises
  • Having worked through examples of business and investment asset sales and both a lifetime and a death inheritance tax computation example
  • An appreciation of key tax planning opportunities.

Capital Investment Appraisal

This course develops an understanding of the snowballing effect of the project appraisal process and its pitfalls. It enables the user to understand how to evaluate opportunities using discounted cash flow techniques, perform risk and sensitivity analysis and present well-structured capital proposals.

Cash Management

This course will look at the basics of cash management including the company policy, essentials of forecasting, value dating, calculating interest costs and various payment systems. It will also cover the key interest benchmarks such as LIBOR and base rate. Sweeping, pooling and netting will be discussed. Investing surpluses will be covered as well as a range of alternatives and their associated risks. Delegates will develop a clear understanding of how and why a corporate treasury exists and why the formulation and application of a treasury policy is essential.

Charities Accounts Workshop – Preparing SORP Accounts

UK Charities must prepare their accounts in the format stipulated by law ie. in SORP format. The Charities Accounts – Preparing SORP course covers the main requirements of the FRS SORP 2015 highlighting the changes to the previous SORP 2005. A comprehensive case study will be used as a practical example and illustrations throughout will demonstrate key treatments required by the SORP. Learning outcomes include obtaining a greater understanding of the contents of SORP 2015, the presentation of the trustees’ annual report, the statement of financial activities and how to analyse support costs.

Charity Governance

Good governance is a key issue for modern day charities. They are required to show that their organisations are well run, properly controlled by an effective governance team and are fully accountable to stakeholders. This Charity Governance course will examine key legal aspects, as required under Charity law and Company law where applicable with a focus on the public benefit reporting requirement, the need to manage risk and ensure that the Charity is, and remains, a going concern.

Reference will also be made to good practice guidelines and procedures that have been developed in the industry.

Charity Tax

At the end of the course participants will benefit from an understanding of the factors involved in making Gift Aid repayment claims, as well as the main direct taxation principles pertaining to charities and fund-raising within the tax exemptions available to charities. The Charity Tax course will also cover other tax reliefs for donations to charities which can be used to incentivise donors and The Charity Commissioner’s and HMRC views regarding trading and fundraising by charities.

Commercial Awareness

This course will provide delegates with the latest knowledge, perspectives and tools that they require to become more commercially astute within the company. Individuals will develop a more commercially aware mindset by understanding the current and future business environment, both internally and externally. It will also highlight how everyone’s job counts to the continuing success of the company and why all individuals must contribute in making commercially sound decisions.

The course will introduce the business environment in which the organisation operates and discuss what it takes to stay successful.  It will enable delegates to understand the importance of having a customer focus – the link between brand, culture and competitive advantage and apply practical thinking skills to make commercially sound decisions.  It will examine strategy from three different perspectives – the  business environment, the company and the brand and culture.

Communicating Effectively with Colleagues and Clients

Your ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and clients will be one of the key determinants of your success throughout your career, especially in the role of manager. Participants will learn how to better develop communication skills at work and build lasting relationships with colleagues and clients as well as understand and develop your assertiveness. You will develop those skills and overcome the day-to-day barriers, enhancing your confidence and capabilities at getting your message across in a variety of situations. This will allow you to choose the right channel for communication depending on the type of client that you work with and the situation that requires attention.
